    The rapidly changing nature of life in Canadian rural communities is more than a simple response to economic conditions. People living in rural places are part of a new social agenda characterized by transformation of livelihoods, landscapes, and social relations, inviting us to reconsider the meanings of community, culture, and citizenship. The share of the U.S. population considered rural ranges from 17 to 49 percent depending on the definition used. Rural definitions can be based on administrative, land-use, or economic concepts, exhibiting considerable variation in socio-economic characteristics and well .
